Why I Specialize in Providing Trauma Therapy for Abortion and Reproductive Care

The topic of abortion and reproductive care is deeply personal, yet it exists within a political and societal landscape that often exacerbates pain, confusion, and shame. For many, navigating these experiences—whether considering an abortion, recovering from one, or grappling with the effects of restrictive legislation—can feel overwhelming and isolating. This is why I’ve chosen to specialize in providing trauma-informed therapy for those affected by these journeys.

Understanding the Layers of Trauma

Abortion and reproductive decisions are never made lightly. They exist at the intersection of deeply personal values, life circumstances, and, often, societal judgment. For some, the decision itself may bring relief but can also come with feelings of grief, guilt, or loss. For others, the inability to access safe, legal, and compassionate care—due to restrictive laws or lack of support—can leave lasting emotional scars.

Additionally, the larger cultural and political conversations around abortion often disregard the lived experiences of those directly affected. Hearing polarizing rhetoric or facing stigmatization can amplify feelings of shame and alienation. My goal as a therapist is to provide a space free from judgment where clients can process these layers of trauma with compassion and understanding.

The Impact of Legislation on Mental Health

National and state-based legislation surrounding abortion has a profound impact on individuals' mental well-being. Restrictions on reproductive care often create feelings of powerlessness, fear, and anger. Many of my clients share stories of navigating barriers to care, such as traveling long distances, facing invasive questioning, or enduring public scrutiny outside clinics. These experiences can trigger or worsen anxiety, depression, or even symptoms of PTSD.

I specialize in working with clients who have been directly or indirectly impacted by these laws, helping them reclaim their sense of agency, process their emotions, and reconnect with their inner strength.

Why This Work Matters to Me

I believe that everyone deserves access to compassionate, trauma-informed care, especially during moments of vulnerability and uncertainty. I chose to focus on abortion and reproductive care because I’ve seen the profound impact that shame, stigma, and a lack of support can have on someone’s mental health. I want my clients to know that they are not alone and that their experiences, choices, and feelings are valid.

This work is personal to me because I am passionate about breaking down the barriers that prevent people from seeking the care they need. Whether someone is struggling with feelings of loss, navigating difficult decisions, or feeling suffocated by external judgment, I aim to provide a space where healing and self-compassion are possible.

As a practitioner, I refuse to let fear silence me when it comes to abortion and reproductive rights. I do not care about the risks to my safety or reputation in standing up for what is right. The work I do is grounded in compassion, justice, and the unwavering belief that everyone deserves access to care, support, and the freedom to make decisions about their own bodies. If speaking out or offering trauma-informed care to those impacted by abortion and restrictive laws makes me a target, so be it—this work is too important to compromise. My priority will always be my clients and their well-being, not my own comfort or safety.

What Therapy Can Offer

Through trauma-informed therapy, I help clients:

  • Process their experiences without judgment or shame.

  • Identify and address the emotional impact of societal, familial, or cultural pressures.

  • Explore feelings of grief, anger, or confusion in a safe, supportive environment.

  • Build resilience and reconnect with their sense of self-worth and empowerment.

I use evidence-based approaches, such as EMDR, mindfulness practices, and creative interventions, to help clients heal at their own pace.

A Commitment to Advocacy and Care

In addition to working with individuals, I am committed to advocating for reproductive justice and dismantling the stigma surrounding abortion. This includes offering education, creating space for nuanced conversations, and supporting legislation that prioritizes compassionate care.

Every person’s story is unique, and I am here to honor that individuality while providing the support and tools necessary for healing. Together, we can navigate the complexities of reproductive care experiences and find a path forward that feels empowering and whole.

If you or someone you know is looking for support, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
